Description
Two (2) Expressionist Paintings, including Bruce Williams and Randy Wolfe. 1st item: Bruce Williams (American/Arkansas, b. 1940) oil on canvas painting titled "Poet in Trouble," depicting a nude figure in a black-walled room or box, crouched with back to the viewer; the subject's hunched shoulders cast a shadow against a blue box or window in the background. Titled en verso with artist name and address, along with exhibition labels for the Mid-South Exhibition of Paintings, 1966, Brooks Memorial Art Gallery, Overton Park, Memphis, Tennessee and the 1966 Mid Year Show at The Butler Institute of American Art, Youngstown, Ohio. Housed in a wooden frame. Sight - 71 3/4" H x 36" W. Framed - 72 3/4" H x 36 3/4" W. Mid 20th century. 2nd item: Randy Wolfe (American/Knoxville, born 1954) oil on linen expressionist painting titled "Nature Alone" depicting a barren tree against a horizon rendered in swaths of pink, red, blue, white, yellow, green, and black. Signed "Wolfe" lower left. 1971 Jr. Mid-South Exhibition label en verso with artist's information, title, and additional information including handwritten note reading "Best in Show". Housed in a silver metal and grey painted wooden frame. Sight - 34 3/4" H x 28" W. Framed - 35 5/8" H x 28 3/4" W. Circa 1971. Provenance: both pieces deaccessioned from the Memphis Brooks Museum of Art. Note: the first annual Mid-South Exhibition was held at the Brooks in 1956, a tradition that continued for the next 17 years and included purchase prizes to help bring regional art into the collection. Jurors included artists such as Wil Barnet and Jack Levine as well as museum directors from institutions such as Museum of Fine Arts, Boston and The Walker Art Center.

1st item: Multiple areas of craquelure. 2nd item: Overall very good condition with few areas of craquelure.
