Four (4) Historic Southern documents, including two (2) Tennessee Governor William Carroll and Newton Cannon signed documents, one (1) Mexican-American War era Colonel Sylvester Churchill signed letter, and one (1) 1811 Mississippi land indenture. 1st item: Governor of Tennessee William Carroll (1788-1844) signed commission indicating that William Brooks and James W. Taylor of Henry County, TN are authorized and empowered to execute and fulfill the duties of Justices of the Peace, dated November 29, 1829. Signed by Carroll and Daniel Graham, Secretary of State, lower left and right. Housed under glass in a black wooden frame. Sight: 10" H x 8" W. Framed: 11" H x 9" W. 2nd item: Governor of Tennessee Newton Cannon (1781-1841) signed land document granting David McSwain forty acres in Henry County, TN, dated August 2, 1836. Signed by Newton and Luke Lea, Secretary of State, lower left and right. Folded in half and float mounted under glass in a wooden frame with gilt trim. Sight: 9 1/4" H x 14 3/4" W. Framed: 10 3/4" H x 16 1/4" W. 3rd item: Mexican-American War era ALS. One page handwritten letter from Colonel Sylvester Churchill (1783-1862) Inspector General of the United States Army, New Orleans, to Major Seawell, Mustering Officer, Mississippi Volunteers, Vicksburg, MS, dated June 28, 1848. The letter discusses the necessity for accuracy in regards to muster rolls in discharging the troops, presumably from service in the war. 4th item: Two-page handwritten land indenture between Pierson Lewis, his wife Martha, and Clinch Gray of Wayne County, Mississippi, for lots number 14 and 15 in Washington, MS, for the sum of six hundred and sixty dollars to be paid by Lewis on January 1, 1812. Witnessed by Lewis, his wife, and others on July 6, 1811.

All documents in overall good, legible condition with toning, acid burn, foxing spots, tears, to be expected from age and manner of use. 1st item: Areas of dampstaining, largest 2 3/4" x 8" (does affect signatures), tears, areas of loss, largest 1/4" x 1", primarily to fold lines. Frame with minor abrasions. Not examined outside of frame. 2nd item: Toning, foxing spots, areas of dampstaining, largest 1 1/2" x 2 1/2", tears (does slightly affect Cannon signature), areas of loss, largest 2" x 1/4", primarily to fold lines. Inscription by previous owner in permanent marker to glass. Frame with areas of loss to gilt. Not examined outside of frame. 4th item: Document is separated at the center fold line with a 1" x 4 3/8" piece of scotch tape repair.
