Description
Collection of 6 numismatic medals or medallions, some engraved by Moritz Fuerst. 1st item: framed bronze medallion reading : "COL. C.C. MENGEL/ THE MENGEL COMPANY INC. ESTABLISHED 1877 FOUNDER." 3" diameter in a 10" square silvered wood frame. Circa 1900. Note: Col. Charles C. Mengel was colonel of the 1st Kentucky Infantry Regiment. 2nd item: Rectangular medallion commemorating the Massachusetts Bay Colony Tercentenary, 1630-1930, 2-1/4" x 3-1/4", housed in its original blue velvet lined case. 3rd item: Major General Alexander Macomb medal, bronzed copper, bust of Macomb facing right. On back: RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS NOVEMBER 3, 1814/ BATTLE OF PLATTSBURGH SEPT. 11 1814 / FURST F . 65 mm. Fair condition with some wear and oxidation. 4th item: Major General Jacob Brown. Bust of Brown facing right. On back: "RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS NOVEMBER 3,1814/ NIAGARA ERIE CHIPPEWA/ BATTLES OF CHIPPEWA. JULY 5, 1814. NIAGARA. JULY 25, 1814. ERIE. SEP. 17. 1814/ FURST. F." Very good condition with slight oxidation and slight dings on portrait, 65mm. 2nd item: Brigadier General James Miller. Bust of Miller facing right with the legend "I'LL TRY" in small letters just below. On back: "RESOLUTION OF CONGRESS NOVEMBER 3,1814/ NIAGARA ERIE CHIPPEWA/ BATTLES OF CHIPPEWA. JULY 5, 1814. NIAGARA. JULY 25, 1814. ERIE. SEP. 17. 1814/ FURST. F." Very good condition with slight dings on portrait, oxidation spot on back, 65mm. 3rd item: "PRESENTED BY CONGRESS TO COLONEL GEORGE CROGHAN 1855". Bust of Croghan facing right. On reverse: "PARS MAGNA FUIT/ SANDUSKY 2 AUGUST 1813". Good condition with slight wear to relief areas on back. 65mm. Provenance: the estate of General Hanford MacNider, Mason City, Iowa.
