Description
Union Academy wool on linen needlework sampler, Williamson County, Tennessee, by Sarah Elizabeth Angeline "Sallie" Andrews. Five alphabetic bands above identifying register, "Sarah E. A. Sampler 1850". Urn filled with a variety of flowers next to verse: "The words of a man's/mouth are as deep waters/and the wellspring of wis/dom as a flowing brook./ Miss IS. Wallis/ Union Academy." Flanked on three sides by a floral vine border. Sight - 23 5/8" H x 25 1/2" W. Framed - 29 1/2" H x 31 5/8" W. Note: This example is closely related to a sampler executed by Mary Halfacre (1835-1912), Union Academy - teacher Isabella Wallis, dated 1850. It has also been documented by the Tennessee Sampler Survey. Sarah Elizabeth Angeline Andrews "Sallie" (b. 1839 in Williamson County, TN, d. 1897 Moore County, TN) was the daughter of George Andrews (1799 - 1886) and Winifred E. Matthews (1803 - 1850) who were married in 1821 in Williamson County, TN. Sarah had twelve siblings. Her father George was a farmer. Sarah Married Samuel McDowell (1839 - 1923) in 1860. He was also listed as a farmer in the 1870 census. Sarah and Samuel had six children. Illustrated "19th Century Williamson County Samplers: Emerging Research" by Jennifer Core, Williamson County Historical Journal, No. 43, 2012 (pp. 40-41). Provenance: Private Tennessee Collection; Sotheby's American Folk Art and Furniture Sale #5905, Oct. 14, 1989, Lot #0089.
Condition
Overall very good condition with few tiny light scattered spots of background staining/discoloration; light fading to some thread colors but many still quite bright; archival framing under UV-resistant glass.
