Description
1920s Tennessee Ladies Auxiliary Autograph or Signature Quilt with pieced, hand-stitched rose-colored ground and 30 peach/gold-colored machine-appliqued flowers, each petal and center embroidered with a name. Names are also hand-stitched in each of the 30 cornerblocks and side bars, with some containing more than one name and/or town names such as Shelbyville, Murfreesboro, Nashville, Lyles, Lascassas, and Tullahoma, Tennessee; a few out of town locations are represented including Philadelphia, Misford, Mississippi, and Lynchburg, Virginia. One bar near the top is signed L.A. Society Unionville Tenn 1926-1927. Note: The quilt was likely made by the Ladies Auxiliary Society of Unionville as a fundraiser, with men and women paying a few cents to have their names embroidered on the quilt, which was then raffled off. While the practice was not uncommon, this one bears an unusually large collection of names - more than 450 total. 86" x 77".
Condition
Some overall fading, a few scattered stains (about 1/2" or smaller), grime along lower edge.
