Description
Lillian Olinsey Kiesler (1911-2001) oil on canvas painting, brightly colored abstract floral, initialed and dated lower right "LK '66" and additionally signed, dated and titled on the back: "Lillian Kiesler / Passion Flowers/ 1966". Original contemporary chrome/woodgrain frame. 25" x 30" canvas, 26" x 31" framed. Provenance: purchased by the consignor at an exhibit of Lillian Kiesler's work in New Jersey in the late 1960s-early 1970s. Biography: Lillian Keisler studied painting at the Art Students League, Cooper Union, and at the Hans Hofmann School of Fine Arts with Hans Hofmann in the 1930s. She was introduced to her husband, avante-garde architect Frederick Kiesler, by the artist Burgoyne Diller in 1934, although they did not marry until 1964. She also taught art education at New York University. Following her husband's death, she helped establish the Frederick and Lillian Keisler Foundation in Vienna and the Austrian Frederick Kiesler Prize. (Source: Smithsonian Archives of American Art).
