Description
Samuel Houston (1793-1863), signed printed document, 1827, commissioning justices of the peace for Gibson County. 9-3/4" x 7-3/4" sight. Also included is an 1862 steel engraving portrait of Houston, "engraved by W.J. Edwards from a daguerrotype," over a cartouche with small illustration titled "City of Houston in Texas." 9" x 5-3/4" sight; matted and in protective plastic wrap. Sam Houston was elected Tennessee's 7th Governor in 1827, resigned 1829, and also served as first President of the Republic of Texas, Governor of Texas and Senator.
Condition
Large water stain across center of document, 5-1/2" long, with splatters at right margin, affecting the last justice's name and the first letter of Houston's first name, rest of signature is clean and bold, date also not affected. Seal lost, 1" area of loss at left margin, general toning, tear at center fold line. Engraving in very good condition, not removed from wrap.
