Oil on canvas of the Confederate General P. G. T. Beauregard (Pierre Gustave Toutant, 1818-1893, ). A note with the painting states the portrait was painted in Paris and presented to Mrs. J. E. Lutz (Adelia (Armstrong) Lutz) by Mrs. Horace Maynard (Laura Ann Washburn). Unframed. 21" W x 25 1/2" H. Provenance and History: Private collection of an Armstrong descendant. Horace Maynard (1814 Ð 1882) was an American educator, attorney, politician and diplomat. Initially elected to the House of Representatives from Tennessee's 2nd Congressional District in 1857, Maynard, an ardent Union supporter, became one of the few Southern congressmen to maintain his seat in the House during the Civil War. Toward the end of the war, Maynard served as Tennessee's attorney general under Governor Andrew Johnson, and later as ambassador to Turkey under President Ulysses S. Grant and Postmaster General under President Rutherford B. Hayes. His connection to the rebel general Beauregard remains somewhat of a mystery given the political differences between the two. The Louisiana-born Beauregard supervised the shelling of Fort Sumter and later, exercised overall authority during General Hood's Tennessee campaign (although he took no direct part in the operation). After the Battle of Nashville and subsequent retreat to Alabama, he joined what little was left of the Army of Tennessee, serving the final months of the war under Joe Johnston. He is buried in the Army of Tennessee section at Metairie Cemetery in his hometown of New Orleans. Adelia Armstrong Lutz (1859-1931) is best known as a painter. She studied art at the Corcoran Gallery in Washington, at the Pennsylvania Academy of Fine Arts, and abroad. Upon her return to Knoxville in 1887, she painted portraits, landscapes and flower studies. She married John Edwin Lutz in 1885 and they built "Westwood", on Knoxville's Kingston Pike in approximately 1890.
