Description
Large and elaborately carved Inuit or Eskimo walrus ivory tusk, carved in the form of a cribbage board. Decorated with high relief carvings of walruses, fish, seals, wolves, polar bears, dogs and whales throughout with additional red pigment highlights visible around teeth and tusks of animals and scrimshaw detail on fish. 22" L. Late 19th century. Provenance: Descendants of the estate of Madge Hardin Walters, early 20th century collector and dealer of Native American and author of Early Days and Indian Ways, Westernlore Press, 1956.
