Description
Grouping of Pre-Columbian musical instruments and figural fragments. 1st item - Pre Columbian flute with red painted mouthpiece and shaft, human effigy decoration near mouthpiece, two flanges below effigy acting as a stand for the pipe, pierced rim design at end of flute. Total length 16". 2nd item - small animal effigy whistle with three holes on back of animal, red paint highlights. 2 3/4" length. 3rd-7th item - pottery and stone effigy fragments including a complete effigy having the head and body. Lengths range 4" to 1 3/4". Provenance - collection of Dr. Lewis B. Hilton (d. 1997), professor emeritus of music education at Washington University. Research by Dr. Hilton included musical instruments of Mexico before the Cortez era.
Condition
1st item - glued break to end of mouthpiece and shaft, loss to pierced rim design, one of the ear decorations missing on effigy. 2nd item - tips of animal effigy appendages missing. 3rd - 7th items - effigy having head and body glued at neck, other fragments with expected wear.
