Description
Two ogee form knife or cutlery boxes, possibly American, circa 1830, of matching form and construction but different sizes, mahogany with inlaid edges, mother of pearl shield-shaped escutcheons, and brass side handles. Interiors have original fittings and probably original velvet linings; the smaller one is fitted to hold 63 utensils; the larger has slots for 48 utensils plus space for 13 large serving pieces. Also included are 42 pieces of early bone handled cutlery (31 knives and 11 forks) Large case is 15-1/2"H x 13" w x 10-1/2"D, smaller one measures 13"H x 12"W x 8"D. Provenance: Collection of Joe Cashia, Meeting of the Waters, Franklin, Tennesssee.
Condition
Both boxes in generally good condition with minor cracks, veneer bubbling and separations, minor repairs to inlays, smaller case with two 1/2" chips to upper lid and a 3" crack to top, staining and fading to interior velvet; knives and forks with cracks and stains to handles, oxidation to blades.
