Description
Robert Watson (California, 1923-2004) oil on canvas, surreal landscape, titled en verso "Carthage Revisited", signed and dated '69 lower right. Martin Gallery, Scottsdale, Arizona label en verso. 11" x 20-1/2" sight, 16" x 24" framed. Provenance: the collection of Stephen and Lisa Steiner Small, Nashville, Tennessee, purchased Watson Gallery, 1969 (receipt retained). Biography (Courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): California born Robert Watson studied art in New York and with Frederick Taubes at the University of Wisconsin and had his first one man show in 1948 at Gumps in San Francisco. He would exhibit in that city many times over the course of his career, as well as in London, Paris, and Jerusalem. One of his best known paintings was the cover art for Ray Bradbury's book, The Martian Chronicles. A 50 year retrospective of his work was held at Weinstein Galleries of San Francisco in 1997, a few years before his death.
