Description
Edward Lamson Henry (American, 1841 - 1919) oil on board White Mountain landscape depicting figures - and adult and child - walking up a valley road towards the mountains. Signed lower left (obscured by frame). Pencil titled and signed en verso with old label reading "The Road to Conway in the White Mtns., Study from Nature, E. L. Henry". Housed in a gilt wood frame. Sight - 10 3/4" H x 7 5/8" W. Framed - 12 7/8" H x 9 3/4" W. Biography (courtesy Askart: The Artists' Bluebook): Edward Henry was born in Charleston, South Carolina and became a noted painter of detailed genre scenes of early 19th century America. He studied at the Pennsylvania Academy and in Paris with Gustave Coubert and Charles Gleyre. He served during the Civil War and painted numerous war scenes on the James and Potomoc Rivers. He was one of the founders of the New York Cragsmoor Art Colony and exhibited at the National Academy of Design for 60 years.
Condition
Board overall good condition. Scattered light abrasions and paint loss to frame.
