Elisee Maclet (French, 1881-1962) oil on canvas painting titled La Ferte Alais, canal scene with church on left bank and figure in rowboat in front foreground, signed lower right. Labels en verso for Wally Findlay Gallery and Galerie Rienzo, New York. 17-1/2" x 25" sight, 26" x 33" framed. Provenance: private Nashville, TN collection; purchased from Galerie Rienzo circa 1997. Accompanied by a 1997 certificate from that gallery stating insurance value of $33,000, and note from Robert Rienzo certifying authenticity. Biography: French Impressionist painter Elisse Maclet was born the son of a peasant gardener, and was taught to paint by the sexton of his parish church. After arriving in Paris, he gained acclaim with his colorful landscapes and a patron eventually encouraged him to paint in the South of France. Maclet enjoyed acclaim during his lifetime but also suffered from a mental illness that took a toll on his career. He was honored with a retrospective in 1957 in Paris, shortly before his death.
