Item Details
Description
Newcomb College Pottery teapot, scenic landscape design, carved to depict trees draped in Spanish moss with blue and green matte glaze. Impressed marks to base: registration mark RY (made 1929), shape number 191, potted by Jonathan Browne Hunt (1876-1943, at Newcomb 1927-1933) and decorated by Anna Francis Simpson. 5" H x 5" diameter x 8" length (including spout). According to the book Newcomb Pottery by Jessie Poesch, Miss Simpson received her diploma of art from Newcomb College in New Orleans, Louisiana, in 1906. She registered as a Graduate Art student for 1906-1908 and joined the ranks of Art Craftsmen from 1908-1923 and 1924-1929. She died in 1930. The book goes on to state that "Miss Simpson exhibited an individuality in her pottery and embroidery that made her a master of her crafts... in 1929, Miss Simpson won a silver medal for the best pottery at the Ninth Annual Exhibition of the Southern States Art League held in San Antonio, for an Espanol design." Note that this teapot differs from other known Newcomb College teapots in that the design is scenic, not floral, and has a lid with a broad, wide knob as opposed to a small finial. However, the lid's glaze and buff body match that of the pot. Provenance: Inherited by consignor from Rosa Rainold Graner, 1904 - 1962, who graduated from Newcomb School of Art in 1926, specialist in ceramic sculpture, awarded the title of Master Craftsman (work was done under her married name, Rai Graner Murray).
Condition
Firing flaw to interior rim; 1/16" flake to tip of spout. Hairlines to interior around spout which do not extend to exterior and do not fluoresce under blacklight.
