Description
Designer & Manufacturer: unknown
Markings: marked; 1960
Country of Origin & Materials: Probably American; bronze, plywood base
Additional Information & Circa: Bronze sculpture acquired from the estate of the late sculptor William “Bill” Tarr (New York City/Sarasota, 1925-1981). Although the stacked plywood base is typical of those Mr. Tarr used on his own smaller sculptures (usually maquettes for the massive public pieces for which he is known), we are certain this is not his work. The artist cypher on the piece is not his, and the abstract expressionist style is totally different from Mr. Tarr’s heavy, brutalist work. Given the fact that he socialized with an older group of artists in New York and later East Hampton – notably Ibram Lassaw and Willem De Kooning, we believe this work was likely given to, or acquired by, Mr. Tarr from one of that group. Provenance: Estate of William Tarr | Private Collection, Sarasota, Florida.
Dimensions: 31.5"h, 12.5"w, 12.5"d
