Summer Decorative Arts Auction Heating Things Up At Garth’s

DELAWARE, Ohio – On July 25, the sale room at Garth’s Auctioneers and Appraisers is sure to heat up as selling begins for a two-day European, Asian and Decorative Arts Auction. Featuring a fine selection of Tiffany lamps, Chinese export, ivories, textiles, bronze work, furniture and fine art, the two-day event is comprised of over 800 quality lots. Day one kicks off with a large oil on canvas titled <i>Siberian Gold Escort</i> by Adolf (Constantine) Baumgartner-Stoiloff estimated at $3,000 - $6,000. Over 150 paintings will be offered across the two days, including: <i>Sweet Summer Time</i> by Emile Vernon, estimated at $10,000 - $15,000; a portrait of a young boy attributed to Thomas Sully, estimated at $6,000 - $8,000; an oil on canvas landscape signed “LCT” for Louis Comfort Tiffany, estimated at $6,000 - $9,000; two oil on canvas works by Thomas Corwin Lindsay - <i>The Cabbage Pickers</i>, estimated at $3,000 - $5,000 and a fall landscape, estimated at $2,500 - $3,500; an oil on panel by Jose’ de Cala y Moya, <i>Courtyard Performance</i>, estimated at $8,000 - $12,000; and dozens of old works ranging from China trade, genre scenes, portraits and landcapes, all estimated reasonably. Tiffany lamps abound: a fine table example with a signed twisted-vine base and Acorn and Oak Leaf (signed) shade, estimated at $20,000 - $30,000; a period Tiffany damascene shade married with a Handel “harp type” floor lamp base, estimated at $4,000 - $6,000; and several student lamps: 10" double patinae marked “Manhattan Brass Company” with butterscotch triple-cased shades, estimated at $5,000 - $5,500; 10” double student lamp known as “The Liberty Bell”, estimated at $4,500 - $5,500; and others. Silver offers another buying opportunity for Tiffany fans, with a five-piece Tiffany & Co. tea and coffee sterling set, estimated at $2,000 - $4,000.

For those more inclined to three-dimensional art, an extensive selection of period and later bronze works is sure to appeal, including two Barbedienne plaques of classical scenes, estimated at $1,000 - $2,000; a charming bronze and ivory of a schoolgirl, after Chiparus, estimated at $1,500 - $2,500; and a depiction of Buffalo Bill and his horse, Charlie, by Walter Winans, estimated at $2,500 - $4,500. Those looking for a bit more lighthearted additions to their collections may be interested in the bronze and shell depiction of a prawn, estimated at $100 - $200 or a diminutive depiction of Pan, estimated at $100 - $300. Ivories include a large signed Oriental carving of two boys seated on a reclining water buffalo, estimated at $1,000 - $1,500; a carved tusk with elephants and a fearsome stylized head (possibly a crocodile), estimated at $600 - $1,200; and several carved animals, puzzle balls, and netsuke examples.

Furniture and decorative accessories do not disappoint, with many fine examples, including tea tables, candle stands, chests, seating options, Staffordshire, Egyptian relics, porcelains and more. Among the finest offerings are a Steinway and Sons Grand Piano from 1918, estimated at $8,000 - $12,000; a Blackamoor candelabra with original polychrome paint, estimated at $3,000 - $5,000; and a George II Long Case Clock, estimated at $3,000 - $5,000.
