Trinity Fine Arts' March 31 Auction Features Distinctive Works by European and American Artists

Feb. 26, 2005

AVON, Conn. - Important works by noted Hudson River School, Rockport School, American Impressionist and Modernist painters, most fresh to the market from private collectors, are highlights of the more than 250 paintings and other American and European works of art to be sold March 31 by Trinity Fine Arts in conjunction with LiveAuctioneers.com.

“We will be showcasing many significant works that are fresh to the art market,” said Stephen R. Gass, President of Trinity Fine Arts, who explained that many of the pieces have been obtained from estates and private collectors. Gass, formerly a partner in Farmington Fine Arts, founded his new Avon, Connecticut-based art auction and appraisal company to continue to provide central Connecticut residents with an alternative to traveling to Boston or New York to acquire fine pieces for their collections.

Highlights of the March 31 auction include:

- Several outstanding landscapes by Hudson River School and other American landscape painters including Alexander H. Wyant, Hermann Herzog and Aaron Draper Shattuck. Of particular note is "The Pier at Atlantic City," a watercolor by Alfred Thompson Bricher (1837-1908) that is one of the finest works by this artist to reach the market. The painting is in pristine condition and is labeled: "William Vareka Gallery." It depicts a steamboat docking at Atlantic City, New Jersey.

- Two important oil paintings by Theresa Ferber Bernstein (1890-2002), one depicting the artist and her husband, William Meyerowitz, painting in front of their house while summering in Gloucester, Mass., and the other, a Jewish wedding scene.

- Two pieces by Hayley Lever (1876-1958), including the oil on canvas, "The Harbor at St. Ives, Cornwall, England." Sotheby's sold a similar painting by this artist, who was born in Australia and educated in London before emigrating to New York in 1911, for more than $60,000.

- A very fine work by Neapolitan master Consalve Carelli (1818-1900) of fishing boats in Naples that was formerly in the Boiardi Collection (of Chef Boyardee fame), as well as an 1874 marine painting, "Waves on the Coast," by noted American artist Arthur Quartley (1839-1886).

- "The Nude," a 24"x47.5" male figure painted in oil on canvas by Frederick Andrew Bosley (1881-1942), which comes from a private collector in Princeton, Massachusetts. Bosley, a New Hampshire native, entered the Boston Museum School in 1900 and became a favored pupil of Edmund Tarbell and Frank Benson. The names Bosley and Ruggles (Alice Ruggles Sohier) appear on the stretcher.

- A private collector's diverse group of paintings by American Modernists Philip Evergood, Reginald Marsh, Robert Phillip, Moses Soyer, Raphael Soyer, Leon Kroll, Leonard Baskin, William Meyerowitz, Chaim Gross, William Gropper, Abraham Walkowitz and Max Weber.

- Paintings by the Rockport School's Antonio Cirino, Jane Peterson and Gianni Cilfone and other American artists including an early Chicago scene by American Impressionist Alson Skinner Clark (1876-1949); two pieces by atmospheric painter Charles Arthur Fries (1854-1940) and three works by Abstract Expressionist Ralph Rosenborg (1913-1992).

- A selection of etchings of New York by New York artists and several signed, limited-edition art books, including the "Hallelujah" suite by noted social realist Ben Shahn and "Facing East" by Jack Levine with text by James Michener.
