Phillips de Pury & Co. announces inaugural London photographs sale to be held on June 22
June 7, 2007
( London) – The Photographs Department at Phillips de Pury is proud to announce its first sale of Photographs to be held at the company’s temporary auction rooms in London.
The sale will be held in two parts: Classic 20th and 21st century Photographs dedicated to the highest quality works from the early and mid-part of the modern century followed by Exposure representing the most sought-after photographs to be sold on the primary market as recently as last year. The fully-illustrated catalog is available for view at www.LiveAuctioneers.com, where those interested may also bid.
Exposure will be an annual photographs sale following Art Basel and will be dedicated to artists working in the vanguard of contemporary photography. It will feature approximately 50 works, the majority of which have never been sold before at auction in Europe. The most desirable artists and images from the past year will be featured, especially those whose shows in the primary market have sold-out, as well as rediscovered photographers who have yet to debut on the secondary market. Proactive in its approach to promote the best of contemporary photography available to the market, Exposure intends to welcome both the new artist and the buyer to this original auction experience. This portion of the sale reaches extensively into global markets and features works by Iranian, Indian, Japanese and European photographers.
Highlights for Exposure include: Desiree Dolron’s poetic " Xteriors II, 2001" estimated between $50,000 and $70,000. Edward Burtynsky’s " Manufacturing no. 18, Cankun Factory," Zhangzhou, " Fujian Province, China, 2005," is estimated at $16,000 -24,000. Mona Kuhn’s " Merle, 2003," a sensually evocative image which graced the cover of her recent monograph, will be offered with an estimate of $16,000-24,000.. Simon Norfolk’s deceptively unsettling and seemingly romantic image, " The North Gate of Baghdad (After Corot), 2004" is estimated between $10,000 and $14,000.
Highlights from the first part include works by the masters of modern and contemporary photographers. The cover lot, Irving Penn’s " Harlequin Dress, Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, 1950" estimated between $100,000 and $140,000, is a rare gelatin silver print from an edition of only 10 examples. Another work by Mr. Penn, " Woman in a Moroccan Palace, Lisa Fonssagrives-Penn, Marrakech,1951," is estimated between $50,000 and $70,000; Candida Hofer’s " Ballet Studio III Hamburg, 2000" is estimated between $24,000 and $36,000; Richard Avedon’s " Lauren Hutton in the Bahamas, 1968," $20,000-30,000; Robert Polidori’s " Gallery of Battles, 1985" estimated between $12,000 and $16,000; Hiroshi Sugimoto’s " Rockefeller Center, 2001," $30,000-40,000; and David Lachapelle’s, " Sarah Jessica Parker: Sex in the Subway, 1999," estimated between $12,000 and $16,000.
