Nov. 15, 2007

HYANNIS, Mass.—Antique fans should plan to attend MV Auctions on Thanksgiving weekend. On Saturday, November 24, MV Auctions / Auctions of Cape Cod and the Islands will conduct a multi-estate sale, featuring items from homes in Brewster, Falmouth, Chatham and other Cape towns. Those interested may view the online catalog and place Internet bids at www.LiveAuctioneers.com.

More than 50 original paintings are slated to cross the block—all of them framed and created by noted, listed artists. Other lots will include fine china and decorative accessories, antique rugs in many varieties and sizes, wonderful period furniture and more. “We wanted a sale that would have people looking forward to something after Thanksgiving dinner, and we think we succeeded,” said Ed Tessier of MV Auctions.

Fine art is expected to highlight the day's festivities. Anticipated top lots include:
• A large winter mountain scene by Hobart Nichols, Jr. (American, 1869-1962). Nichols was a renowned genre and landscape painter and illustrator who once served as president of the National Academy of Design. He studied at the Art Students League in Washington, D.C., and at the Academie Julian in Paris. The artist lived most of his life in Bronxville, N.Y., near New York City.
• Three landscapes by Charles Gruppe (Canadian-born American artist, 1860-1940). The landscape and marine painter was largely self-taught but did study in Holland, and many of his works are of Dutch-inspired scenes. All three works to be sold are landscapes, and two feature cows. Also offered will be a large oil painting by the artist's son, Emile Gruppe (American, 1896-1978).
• A large oil painting of a landscape with figures, by Anthony Thieme (Dutch-born American artist, 1888-1954). Thieme was an acclaimed coastal landscape and townscape artist. He studied in Holland, Germany and Italy before emigrating to the U.S. in the 1920s. In New York, he painted set backdrops for Broadway shows. He later owned homes in Rockport, Mass., and St. Augustine, Fla.

Also to be sold will be an important, unsigned watercolor portrait of French Gen. Lafayette, executed in the early 19th century; a watercolor of the U.S. frigate Alliance, which transported Lafayette to France in 1779, signed “MHJ” and circa 1820; a seascape by Stanley Woodward (American, 1890-1970); and a luminous painting attributed to the artist Marshall Johnson (American, 1850-1921).

Just secured were two large bronze sculptures and several oils by Umberto Romero. The fine art category will also feature works by Herbert DeGroff Main, T.B. Craig, Mary Butler, Marjorie Phillips, George Thomson, Alice Beach Winter, Clifford Ashley, Sven Svendsen, Hugo Hofstein, H.A. Fish, Helen Balfour, Wells Sawyer, William Adam and F. Holdensen; plus etchings and Nantucket paintings.

China and decorative accessories will be offered in abundance. Featured will be a large selection of Canton china, all in good condition and from the 19th century; an impressive set of Mason's ironstone with serving pieces in the Imari 2240 pattern; a nice selection of pewter; an impressive Civil War field surgeon's kit; Rose medallion, including a 16-inch bowl; and several Nantucket baskets.

Also from the category is an important whale bone and ivory cane; an assortment of 19th century sea captains' canes; a Jose Reyes covered Nantucket purse; some Bennington pieces; a set of 17th century pipe tongs; Louis Vuitton luggage; Native American items, including moccasins, baskets and a breast plate; an early Rookwood vase in the Oriental style; marine china; and copper luster.

Quality antique rugs also take the stage during this sale. Certain to wow the crowd will be a stunning room-size Oushak, measuring 12 feet by 14 feet, in ivory with rust highlights; a rare 4-foot by 6-foot 19th century Aubusson; two Portuguese needlepoints; four room-size Sarouks; a spectacular 12-foot by 16-foot Zeigler Mahal; Hamadan pieces, including scatters; and a lovely 4-foot by 8-foot Bidjar.

Period American furniture has become a staple at most MV Auctions, and this sale will be no exception. Expected highlights include a Chippendale cross stretcher Pembroke table with Marlboro legs, made of mahogany, with original finish (circa 1770s) and a Hepplewhite four-drawer chest with French feet and several high boys.

Also from the category is a Sheraton cookie corner four-drawer chest in great condition; an interesting group of about a half-dozen Arts & Crafts chairs; an 1898 Heywood Wakefield wicker beach chair; a walnut 2/3 chest of drawers; a two-part brass bound campaign chest, circa 1880s, bought by the consignor in 1952 from Harrod's; a pair of 1690 bannister back chairs; and a George III lowboy.

In addition, the sale will feature a Duncan Phyfe-style mahogany pedestal table, made around 1820 and heavily carved; a bird cage tilt-top tea table; a Dunhill lead-lined humidor on stand, made circa 1900; a nice tiger maple tall case clock; and more. New items in all categories are still being added.
