Important Art and Spectacular Bling To Highlight Clars’ Dec. 1 and 2 Fine Antique and Estate Auction

OAKLAND, Calif.—Clars Auction Gallery’s December Fine Antiques and Estate Auction will bring to the block an exceptional selection of art, jewelry, furniture and special collections. This impressive two-day sale will be held Dec. 1 and 2 and will feature close to 2,000 lots overall. Highlighting the Sunday Main Gallery Auctions will be an impressive selection of art from renowned African/American artists. Among the artists to be represented will be a signed oil on masonite entitled “Flowering” from Walter Henry Williams (American 1920-1998). Known for his modern landscapes, this work is estimated to bring $8,000 to $12,000. Coming from Elizabeth Catlett (American/Mexican 1919- ), who is known for her prints and paintings depicting the female figure and considered by many to be one of the greatest American black sculptors, will be the signed and framed lithograph “Black Maternity. (estimate $7,000 to $9,000). Sargent Johnson (American 1888-1967) will also be represented by a signed framed lithograph. Entitled “Singing Saints” this work is expected to bring $6,000 to $8,000. Charles Wilbert White (American 1918-1979) was the second African/American artist to be elected a full member to the National Academy of Design. He gained national and international recognition for his social realist murals which documented milestones in African/American history. On Sunday, Dec. 2, Clars will offer his “Gideon,” a signed and framed lithograph estimated to bring $6,000 to $8,000.
Strong international bidding will be seen on two important works from Chinese artists. A signed and framed pastel on paper entitled “Riding Towards the Pacific” by Tsing-Fang Chen (Taiwan 1936-) is estimated to bring $10,000 to $20,000. Chen, famous as a painter, art historian, philosopher and writer, initiated Neo-Iconography in painting. Luo Zhongli (China 1948- ) will be represented with his oil on canvas entitled “Grandmother’s Love” which is estimated to bring $40,000 to $60,000. Clars’ November sale featured four works from Zhongli, all of which earned strong results totaling over $260,000.
Among the other artists to be represented will be works from Joan Miro, Antoine Blanchard, Francisco Zuniga and James Everett Stuart plus many more. The Saturday Gallery Auction will feature a very special collection of African art from the William Montepert collection.
Extraordinary jewelry will take center stage during the final Sunday session with plenty of stunning bling to dazzle the holiday season. An absolutely spectacular Art Deco diamond and emerald bracelet is estimated at $75,000 to $100,000, has a total stone weight of 30 ct. and measures just over 7 inches in length. A 14k yellow gold, platinum and diamond brooch, styled like a bow with ribbon sprays, is expected to bring $18,000 - $22,000.
The two-day auction will also feature hundreds of lots of fine antique furniture, both Continental and American. Among the styles to be represented will be Arts and Crafts, Early American, Mid-Century Modern, Louis XV and Louis XVI. Fine crystal, art glass and porcelain selections, always strong at Clars, won’t disappoint bidders.
