Fine Art and Jewelry in Rago’s Dec. 2-3 auction

Lambertville, NJ - David Rago Auctions proudly presents its Fine Art and Jewelry Auction on Dec. 2-3, with live Internet bidding provided by LiveAuctioneers.com. The Fine Art session will begin at 4 pm (EST) on Friday, Dec. 2, under the direction of Andrew Bertolino, with more than 200 lots of rare art. The fourth annual Antique and Fine Jewelry Auction will be held on Saturday, Dec. 3, at 12 noon (EST), under the direction of Sarah Churgin, Rago Auctions’ Jewelry specialist, who has a comprehensive knowledge in herfield. Over 300 lots are featured, obtained directly from estates and including rare and extraordinary pieces. Within the grouping are Georgian, Victorian, Art Nouveau, Art Deco, Retro, Modernist and Contemporary items, including works from Tiffany, Cartier, Georg Jensen, Raymond Yard and Feodor Ruckert.

The Fine Art Session features several New Hope Impressionist paintings from a private collection, its contents purchased years ago directly from the artists. Several of these works were originally purchased in Bucks County. Included are works by Kenneth Nunamaker, “Winter Brook,”a signed and framed oil on canvas, estimated $45,000-55,000; a framed oil on canvas by Alfred Nunamaker, “Winter Landscape,” that was inspired by a scene that was visible from the consignor’s home and estimated $12,000-18,000; an oil on canvas by Harry Leith-Ross, “Sand Bar in Mist”; and a work titled “Canal Bridge, New Hope,” by John Folinsbee estimated $12,000-18,000.

Other featured New Hope Impressionists include a signed work by Fern I. Coppedge, “Winter Evening on the Farm”; a framed pen and ink on paper by Oscar Bluemner, “View at Secaucus, New Jersey, 1914” and a framed watercolor on paper by Mary Elizabeth Price “Catching a Breeze.”

Works by well-known Bucks County artist Walter Baum include “St. Michaels, Autumn,” 1943, signed, dated and inscribed To Harvey Clymer/Xmas, 1943/From Mrs. Clymer; an oil on board “Road to Bethlehem” mounted in original hand-made Ben Badura giltwood frame; a painting titled “Winter In the River Valley, 1946” and a 1934 framed oil on board “Saucon Mill.”

Three nautical paintings by Marshall Johnson Jr. from a family collection are for sale, as well as impressive landscapes by Eric Sloan, including a large oil on masonite“Maine Autumn” in an artist-designed barn board frame; and an amazing work by William Keith: “ Berkeley, California.” Featured Western include Frank Whiteside, Harold Weston and Grace Carpenter Hudson. A signed oil on panel by Joseph Henry Sharp, “ Crow Agency, Montana,” inscribed To Mr. Hubbard/From J.H. Sharp/Crow Agency, Mont./September 20, 1905 is estimated at $20,000-30,000.

Latin American contemporary art includes a cast bronze work by Javier Marin titled “Head of a Woman,” and works by Rudolfo Morales, Alfredo Zalce and Leandro Velasco. Other contemporary offerings include art by James Havard, Diano Burko and Douglas Ferrin. Several European works featured include an Oriental scene by Paul Lazerges, dated 1893.

The Saturday Jewelry session offers many exquisite pieces including a late Art Deco diamond and platinum strap bracelet of cushion shaped pavé-set links with mine-cut diamonds and channels of baguette-cut diamonds joined by flexible rows of bezel-set diamonds, estimated $22,000-35,000. Also offered is a stunning Tiffany & Co. brooch in platinum and 18k yellow gold of bombé form with an oval faceted rubelite framed by cascades of oval faceted tanzanites and circular-cut diamonds, estimated $12,000-18,000. An Edward Colonna for L’Art Nouveau Bing Paris pendant with light-green enamel, pearls and a diamond in 18k yellow gold with platinum is estimated $3,500-6,500.

Other desirable pieces include an outstanding Edwardian diamond crescent brooch in platinum with 14 diamonds that includes a pair of cushion-cut, 10 mine-cut and a pair of single-cut diamonds estimated $10,000-12,000; a Raymond C. Yard Art Deco aquamarine brooch in platinum with diamonds in the original green leather box; an Art Deco crystal sapphire and diamond brooch in 18k white gold that has a parallelogram bisected by channels of caliber sapphires with each quadrant supported by a diamond inset strap of 12 fine mine-cut diamonds; an exquisite Tiffany & Co. brooch in 18k gold with a circular faceted citrine and diamonds in white enamel; and an Art Nouveau winged serpent and sword brooch in 14k yellow gold with a min-cut diamond.

A very early Georg Jensen hair comb in Skonvirke-aesthetic with clear influence of Charles Robert Ashbee is offered, as well as an unusual Russian enameled silver bowl with bear-handles and decorated with scrolling foliage, estimated $1,500-2,500. Also for sale are fine silver holloware and an amazing collection of diamond engagement rings and whimsical brooches, classic pearl and diamond earrings, vintage evening bags by Gucci, Hobe, Saks, St. Laurent and Gorham.
