AVON, Conn. - Trinity Fine Arts announces its annual fall auction of important paintings, prints, and sculpture to be held on Saturday, October 21. Real-time Internet bidding will be provided by LiveAuctioneers.com.
Stephen R. Gass, a partner in Trinity Fine Arts, commented that he is extremely pleased with the high quality of the work offered. Much of the work originates from private consignors and is fresh to the market. Gass noted, “We have rapidly garnered a reputation as a quality auction house which can deal fluidly in American as well as international works of art. Many clients have expressed their pleasure in working with us. We endeavor to be approachable and professional. Unlike many American houses, we actively seek foreign works and have established excellent relationships with our international customer base.”
One of the most important works in the auction is a rare painting of Fifth Avenue and 42nd Street on a rainy night by the highly sought-after American artist Charles Constantine Hoffbauer (1875-1951). The Hoffbauer was consigned by a private Connecticut collector who acquired the work in the mid-1970s. It has not been to market since then.
American Rhode Island artist George Hayes (1854-1945) is also represented by perhaps one of his finest paintings ever to come to auction. Hayes’ Cows in a Pasture from 1899, comes to the auction from a private northern Massachusetts collector. Other 19th-century American art includes three paintings by Roswell Morse Shurtleff (1838-1915), The Maple Grove, Keene Valley, NY, Adirondack Forest and Harvest Time. A noteworthy artwok by Nelson Augustus Moore (1824-1902) is titled Luminous Sunset Over the Valley, depicting a beautiful panorama landscape at sunset. Moore was a Connecticut artist, who worked in the town of Kensington.
Gene Shapiro, partner in Trinity, emphasized the breadth of the works to be offered at the auction. “As a result of our success in prior auctions branching out into regional markets both domestically and internationally, we have decided to continue attracting varied consignments and putting together an auction that really has something to offer for everyone,” he said
Shapiro, who speaks Russian fluently, was instrumental in bringing to the sale a large group of close to 70 paintings by well-known Russian masters of Russian painting. These artists’ works are among the most valuable in museums such as the Hermitage in St. Petersburg, and the Tretyakov Gallery in Moscow. Russian artists in Trinity’s fall sale include Konstantin Korovin (1861-1939), Philip Maliavin (1869-1940), Nicolai Fechin (1881-1955), and Alexander Yakovlev (1887-1938).
When asked to explain how a Connecticut auction house has become such an important source in the Russian art market, Shapiro replied, “We are continuing to attract quality consignments from American collectors. These collectors oftentimes may have only one or two works by a Russian artist in their collection, but they know that Russian art has suddenly become very valuable. We are one of the very few auction houses in America that consistently sells, advertises to, and works with Russian collectors. I strongly encourage any collectors with Russian paintings in their collections to contact us for auction estimates.”
For collectors of European art, Trinity is offering beautiful and impressive works by listed artists from many countries. Italians are represented by artists including Oscar Ricciardi (1864-1935), Cesare Bentivoglio (1868-1952) and Gioacchino La Pira (1839-1870). Several exceptional 19th-century Neapolitan gouaches will be offered.
Important European modern paintings are also in the auction, by hotly collected artists including the Portugese Abstract artist Manuel Cargaleiro (B1927) and the French modernists Claude Venard (1913-1999) and Constantine Kluge (1912-2003).
Other French paintings include works by the Barbizon master Narcisse Virgile Diaz de la Pena (1807-1876), and paintings by Louis Claude Mallebranche (1790-1838), Rene Rimbert, Camille Bombois (1883-1970), Manuel Robbe (1872-1936) and Adolph Monfallet (1816-1900).
A large collection of Israeli and Jewish art including works by Raffi, Mane-Katz (1894-1962) and Yaacov Agam (B1928) is being offered as well. Numerous Old Master paintings and prints complement the auction, including an old Rembrandt print, Landscape with Three Gabled Cottages beside a Road.
Other American art highlights include a fresh-to-market painting by Lilllian Genth N.A. (1876-1953) titled Nude by the Stream. The work is oil on canvas, 24 x 20 in. (61 x 50.8 cm.) and is the property of a western Massachusetts collector. Prices for works by Genth, who studied with Whistler, grow stronger each year. Of special note is an oil on board, dated 1937, by Joe Selby (1893-1960), Bill Bones. This work also is from a private Connecticut collector.
The Modernist era is well represented. Included are works by Preston Dickinson (1891-1930), Allen Tucker (1866-1939) and Ben Benn (1884-1983). The Rockport School is represented with works by Emile Gruppe (1896-1978), Antonio Cirino (1889-1983) and William Lester Stevens N.A. (1888-1969). Other American artists of note in the sale include Samuel H. Thurston, Robertson Kirtland Mygatt (1862-1919), Herman Dudley Murphy (1867-1945), Erma Dyer (B1890) and Harry Hoffman (1871-1964).
The works on paper include numerous pencil-signed and numbered sporting pieces by Leroy Neiman (B1921), including Mickey Mantle, Mark McGuire, and John Elway. In addition, a fresh-to-market drawing from Norman Rockwell, used as an illustration for the February 1938 issue of Woman’s Home Companion, is included in the sale, as are limited edition prints by major contemporary artists such as Robert Indiana and Richard Estes.
