Paris Auction to Present Important Collection of Russian, 19th century, Impressionist, Modern and Contemporary Paintings

Oct. 19, 2007

PARIS—Drouot based Aguttes Auction house, in association with the Cabinet d’Expertise Dan Coissard, will present an exceptional collection of almost 300 Russian, French and European 19th and 20th century paintings Oct. 31. Private European and American collections and collection of furniture by Diego GIACOMETTI will be auctioned as well. As with all Aguttes auctions, live Internet bidding will be provided by www.LiveAuctioneers.com, where those interested may also view the fully illustrated auction catalog.

The sale begins with an important selection of Russian painters from the École de Paris that features a sunset in Venice by Georges LAPCHINE, two angelic yet arresting portraits by Alexeï Alexeiewitch HARLAMOFF and a series of still lifes, landscapes and street scenes including some beautiful works by Élie-Anatole PAVIL and Constant-Alexis KOROVINE.

Other noteworthy works include a beautiful oil on canvas by Vladimir BARANOFF ROSSINE during his Corsican period, a still life by Mikaïl LARIONOV, as well as a bouquet of flowers by the former artist’s real-life love, Natalia GONTCHAROVA. A series of works by André LANSKOY will herald the star of this section of the sale, an extraordinary oil on canvas by Wassily KANDINSKY, a master work of art from his abstract geometric period created in 1931.

The second part of the sale titled Modern and Contemporary Art will open with a collection of exceptional furniture by Diego GIACOMETTI created exclusively for Mr. X of Geneva. The collection includes two particularly eye-catching pieces; a bronze console with a green patina embellished with a decor of caryatids on the four legs and three playful deer perched on the cross-strut, preceded by a magnificent bronze round table with an antique patina decorated with a leaf and frog decor.

An impressive collection of modern art follows, highlighted by a circus scene gouache by Fernand LEGER dated 55, as well as a remarkable drawing by the Austrian master of Expressionism, Egon SCHIELE, portraying a woman in her underclothes in an evocative pose signed and dated 1917, arguably the artist’s most successful and renowned period. Two silkscreens by Andy WARHOL, dated 1985, of Queen Margrethe II of Denmark and of Queen Beatrix of the Netherlands will be followed by an abstract composition by Carmelo ARDEN QUIN, student of Joaquin Torres-Garcia. Finally, a psychedelic seascape composition by Roy LICHTENSTEIN will be presented, as will a sleek bronze sculpture by Hans ARP from his Abstraction-Creation period consecrated during the last years of the artist’s life.

A series of beautiful oils on canvas by Impressionists Eugène BOUDIN, Maximilien LUCE, Louis VALTAT and Eugène GALIEN-LALOUE comprise the final and more classical part of the sale, amongst which are more modern works such as two bouquets of flowers by Henri LESIDANIER and Bernard BUFFET. However it is the magnificent bronze by Camille CLAUDEL entitled Le Dieu envolé (The Vanished God) portraying the emblematic and heart-rendering representation of her lost love with Auguste RODIN that leaves a lasting impression.
