Askan Quittenbaum
Our auctions in Munich take place six times a year at our headquarters in Theresienstraße 60. In order to make our offer and its submissions accessible to an international audience, we publish all objects with detailed descriptions and photos on our homepage. We produced comprehensive catalogues which we ship worldwide. In addition, we publish the highlights of the auctions on social media and advertise in daily newspapers and art magazines.
We class ourselves as a traditional auction house, whilst using the latest technology to maximise accessibility for customers. Bidders can submit bids via our homepage as well as participate in the auctions live via online auction platforms such as Liveauctioneers or Lottissmo.
Art Nouveau - Art Deco The art nouveau and art deco will be auctioned in May and November. We are particularly successful in offering French glass art. This is demonstrated by our high turnover for vases by Emil Gallé, Daum Frères and Lötz. Special auctions of Lalique complete the range of glassware. Another area of our expertise is our collection of art deco sculptures. By being the competitive leader, our house has been able to secure the sales of designs by Henry van de Velde.
Design - Murano Glass We regularly hold special auctions on design themes of the 20th century, which focus on a country or a design school. At the end of the year, we will be presenting particularly important furniture and lighting in our 'Highlight Auction'. In keeping with our focus on Murano glass Askan Quittenbaum presented a comprehensive catalog, which was published in 2012 by DuMont Verlag.
Modern and Contemporary Art We sell Pop Art particularly successfully. Besides we are well suited for auctioning Picasso ceramics. In addition, the artist postcards by Karl Schmidt-Rottluff and Ernst Ludwig Kirchner were among the highlights of our Kunstofferte in the past.
Author’s Jewellery Our passion for author’s and artist’s jewellery began with a collection of kinetic jewellery by the goldsmith Friedrich Becker. Once a year we dedicate an auction to this exciting topic.
Collections We have a special expertise when it comes to auctioning a whole collection. We guarantee an optimal content and photographic representation of your collection objects in a separate catalog.
How it all started The history of the art shop dates back to 1956, when Ellen Piper Quittenbaum, the mother of today's managing director Askan Quittenbaum, opened a gallery for African art in Dusseldorf. In 1968 she founded a gallery for jewellery, Art Nouveau glass and antiques in Hamburg. Askan Quittenbaum entered the business in 1992, and together they led the gallery Quittenbaum in Hamburg-Blankenese, focussing on Art Déco, design and Murano glass. In 1998, the company headquarters moved to Munich, and on 11 May of that year, the first Art Nouveau auction was held. The following year a Bauhaus auction was held comprising around 400 objects, which laid the foundation for the house specialising in modern design.

Italian Design
Our auction year will begin with Italian design on 19 March. We will feature 300 rare and well-known objects by renowned Italian designers. One of the highlights of the auction is Max Ingrand's very elegant ceiling light for Fontana Arte. Ingrand designed numerous lights and glass objects during his years as artistic director of the glass manufacturer, and their tasteful style remains modern to this day. The clear and blue glass ceiling light with fine contours was created around 1955 and is estimated with ?10,000 to ?12,000. Designs from the 1970s and 1980s, including works by Ettore Sottsass, Alessandro Mendini, and Peter Shire for Memphis and Alchimia, are highly sought after. The 'Peninsula' table from the first Memphis collection, which is rarely seen, is available for ?6,000.Murano Glass
Murrine mania. The technique of murrine has been rediscovered and reinterpreted by glassmakers throughout history. It involves processing glass threads into tubes, cutting them into cross-sections, and fusing them together to create colorful, graphic, and sometimes figurative motifs, also known as millefiori. The three most expensive vases in this auction were made using this technique and come from the Venini and Barovier manufactories. Venini employed various designers, artists, and architects from the 1920s to the 1970s, creating a broad artistic spectrum. At Barovier, the focus is on Ercole Barovier, the long-standing company owner and designer. Designers faced a challenge with the Murrine theme, as they had to give the classic technique a new form.Modern Art and Old Masters
Discover over 25 lots from an attractive private collection dedicated to the art of the Old Masters. As usual, art from the late 19th and early 20th centuries is also represented in our auction with two exciting works by Wilhelm Kuhnert. In the field of post-war art, our highlight is Walter St?hrer's painting from 1963, which is characterized by vibrant colors, flowing forms and a dynamic composition. LOVE IS IN THE AIR is the name of another special section within the art auction. It contains selected objects from a private collection, all of which deal with the theme of love and express this visually.Bidder Reviews for Quittenbaum Kunstauktionen GmbH (57)
