5: GEORGE OHR Mug covered in leathery copper & gunmetal

Hammer Price:
$2600
GEORGE OHR Mug covered in a rare leathery copper and gunmetal glaze with melt fissures, possibly coated with melted metals such as pewter and copper. Script signature. 4 1/2" x 4 1/2"
Condition
"This mug came from the floor-to-ceiling shelves illustrated in the Blasberg book [George E. Ohr and His Biloxi Art Pottery]. There were so many mugs that as one or two went out the door, Jim would just replace them. In August of '73, when we looked at all those mugs with gunmetal or brown glazes, they all looked the same, but this one, when seen in the light, had the unmistakable silver and gold sheen of metals. Ohr must have melted copper filings on the surface. Jim Carpenter volunteered that he'd never noticed another piece glazed like this among all the Ohr he'd unpacked, and it may well be that it is the only one of its kind that Ohr ever made."
