I've been involved with antiques most of my life, fully employed with them all my working life, and nothing has changed the business as dramatically as the Internet. There is no denying that Live Auctioneers has helped our auction company expand our business. Since we started using their online auction service, our prices have only increased. We have seen thousands of people look at our auctions and have received hundreds of absentee bids, and this is just for one auction! Having several of these auctions has only proved that we are reaching a broader audience than we could have ever imagined.
For example, we just held a country store style auction a few weeks ago. So far, this auction has proved to be the best type of auction to hold online. We had many items that sold to online bidders for double or triple the value that we could have gotten here at our auction house. Some of these items had 30-60 bids, and the majority of the bidders were online. Instead of having just a few people at your auction bid on each item, you are opening that bidding to anyone, wherever they may be. It is hard to believe that the whole world is watching your auction house, but it is true. For this auction alone, we had hundreds of bidders from all across the United States and various countries around the world.
Live Auctioneers has made this adjustment very easy for our auction company, and it has been nothing but a great experience. With just a little extra work, our auction company is now known across the world.

Well here we are at Christmas 2006. I can't believe its 2 1/2 years since our first auction in July 2004 with LiveAuctioneers and Ebay Live Auctions and after that 2 1/2 years and over 100 live auctions, Vectis and our association with LiveAuctioneers goes from strength to strength.
As usual last week our 4 sessions with you produced a sell through rate of between 20% and 40% and forms the backbone of our business.
I am pleased we made that decision in July 2004 to be the first UK auction house to work with you (I think also European) and of course are happy to be one of over 500 auction houses worldwide who you work with.

At first, the thought of putting sales live on the internet is enough to make most auctioneers run for the hills, however when your first online catalogue attracts in excess of 40,500 visitors, it is enough to make you sit up and listen.
That was back in November of last year, and we have since put each of our Fine Art sales, as well as selected Specialist sales on eBay through LiveAuctioneers, with generally very pleasing results, and every sale seems to provide a little surprise or two. In the last sale it was the pair of late 19th century Chinese blue and white vases, estimated at £700-1,000. The bidding opened, (and closed) with an eBay user at £6,000, the result of numerous absentee bids placed through the site in advance.
Our last Fine Art sale held in April 2006, offered our best results to date, with bidders signed up from no less than 37 different countries around the world, and between them they purchased goods to the value of 10% of the sale total, and in this business, it is numbers that speak louder than words!

“Bidding via the Internet, using your computer at home or in the office, has to make buying at auction a much more attractive proposition, particularly for bidders in other countries and time zones, or those who simply don’t have the time to attend our sales and sit through the auction to bid on a single lot,” Christopher Ewbank said.
“From agreeing to try the system, it took us just a week to set it up and put each lot online complete with picture, description and estimate. The results were amazing. The 910 lots we had for sale were viewed online more than 19,000 times, and by the time the sale started, we had more than 180 buyers registered with us to bid via the Internet. Of those, 97 came from North America, from 26 different states. Other bidders came from such obscure places as Taiwan, Korea and Macao. In addition to many bidders from continental Europe, there were 37 bidders based in the UK, and ironically, one was a professional person who lives in Old Woking who would not otherwise be able to participate in daytime sales.
“We have posted our sale catalogues on our Internet website for several years now, but because LiveAuctioneers.com is an eBay company, it means that anyonesearching eBay for a specific object also gets to see if the same object is included in one of our sales … (There were) more than 500 emails asking for condition reports and advice, from buyers as far away as Australia. But the whole operation went off extremely smoothly, and bidders in the room experienced no difference in proceedings.
“The big difference was in the prices we achieved, and the Lalique vase illustrated the point perfectly. The bidding opened among buyers in the room and the price rose quickly to £1,100. At that point, one of the two bidders pulled out, but then two LiveAuctioneers bidders joined in and the price kept rising … the vase was sold to one of them bidding from his home on a ranch in Arizona for a price that was more than double the final bid in the room and more than five times the estimate. There can be no better proof that Internet real-time bidding does mean that our vendors’ property receives the maximum amount of exposure and achieves top prices when it is sold. Importantly, it costs no more for (consignors) to participate in the sales we put live and online.”

At our first trial auction, we sold 15% of lots online. While this may not seem like a lot, many of the internet under-bidders pushed up prices to record levels. Even more important, both buyers and sellers responded favorably to the new technology. Internet & phone bidders watched the sale in "real time", consignors saw new technology being embraced to sell their property for the highest price possible and it all went off smoothly! The eBay exposure far exceeded our expectations and drew in hundreds of new clients. Scott Miles was instrumental in our company making this transition and he is to be commended for doing a fine job.

We're just a small auction house in upstate New York. We compete in a male-dominated industry of approximately 50 auctioneers in a 50-square-mile area, so standing out and getting the great merchandise is important. When we had an
opportunity to sell Italian and Dutch Master paintings, which had only been sold by the large and prestigious known auction houses, we promised the estate to make those paintings available to the world. "Our Oct. 10-12 auction was the first one in which we offered Internet bidding through LiveAuctioneers.com. We were very happy with the result. Internet buyers took 26% of the lots and definitely helped the bottom line. It's difficult to gauge exactly to what extent Internet participation affected the underbidding, but it was definitely a factor.
