Sylvia Lucas Gallery closing sale of mostly antique prints. One of my lots # 180 described as including Audubon prints, didn't have any. Overall, I am satisfied because my other lot (# 298) did contain some rare and valuable artworks. Communications were very good and I want to thank Danielle for being timely and very helpful. I didn't expect the staff working the auction to be antique print experts and they had almost the full spectrum of subject categories to sort out in ~ 325 very mixed lots. The winners have a lot of work to do finding new homes for all those artworks on paper! The auction was great entertainment for me and I have some new additions to my natural history art collection to pass on.

Shipping costs way too high
This is second time I have bought from this auction. The shipment costs are ridiculously expensive … so much so that I don’t believe I will buy anything again from their auctions

the item got to us damaged.
The auction house had recommended a shipper, we trusted them. The delivery guy ABSOLUTELY did not care about the item. It got to us broken, not as in picture. Delivery guy said "What do you expect, you bought it online?" The auction house did not agree to pay for a repair. It is a disaster. I love the item. It is a gorgeous vintage furniture that it unnecessary damaged now.

3rd Party Shipping
On-line bidders particularly of small items, unanimously agree that having to deal with an auction house that uses 3rd party shippers after the sale is the # 1 reason they refuse to bid with a house that does so. Auction houses that offer in-house shipping as a courtesy service, understand that in keeping packing and shipping costs low they increase bidder confidence which translates into higher bids per item. 3rd party shippers are profit driven, without any incentive to be competitive, as they inherit bidders with little choice, but to use them. Even when an auction house lists several options, shipping quotes alway turn out to be around the same. My business ships a lot, so I can accurately estimate what it will cost to pack and ship a small box. Without exception, when an auction house packs and ships, my estimate will be in-line with their actual cost. Equally so, the quotes from 3rd party shippers will always be two to three times higher. So, the easy solution is to avoid auctions that don't ship in-house, right? Except in this case, Roland included a line on each item's bid page stating (possibly by in error) that they ship and costs will be added after sale. I sent them two messages through Live Auctions DM, but got no reply, so I finally requested quotes from their two shipper recommendations. The first returned a quote of $180 for a 10 x 12 x 6 box of items with a hammer value of $225. In fact, the shipping cost of $68 I ended up paying was only achieved after haggling with that shipper, who first quoted something in the high $80 range. I finally heard back from Roland, who state rather matter-of-factly they didn't handle shipping (which was indeed in their buyer's agreement, but was also different than stated on the bid pages. Adding insult to injury, they offered to consign the items for me at a commission of course... Draw your own conclusions.

Roland NY is professional and efficient, and resolved a difficult shipping issue for me.
Roland NY went "above and beyond" to resolve a shipping issue for me. I was having trouble locating a shipper that was able to ship one of the items I purchased, and Roland NY stepped in and offered to take care of getting the item shipped to me. I am most appreciative for their willingness to get the problem resolved! Their lot descriptions were accurate, and the photos further enhanced the written descriptions. The packaging was excellent, and the shipping cost was very reasonable. All the items arrived looking just like their photos. I am looking forward to future auctions with Roland NY.
