Waterman 'Smallest Pen In The World'Following an extremely successful sale in July this new collection contains the usual wide variety of early writing implements through to new limited edition models from all the famous names. Rarities include a Waterman's Cardinal Red Hard Rubber 'Smallest Pen in the World'. This is, arguably, the rarest Waterman pen. It is also sometimes known as the 'Doll' pen after the example in black made for Queen Mary's Doll's House, where it rests on the King's Library Table. Waterman used the 'Smallest Pen in the World' and their giant Model 20 as a clever way to promote their business and increase sales. Customers were attracted to a shop selling Waterman pens by a window display or advertisement featuring these novelties, where they would be shown the pens and all the salient features and benefits of a Waterman pen would pointed out to them by a sales assistant. With luck the customer would then purchase a Waterman from stock, thereby increasing sales. This clever ploy was not just confined to shops. Waterman advertised their stand at the British Empire Exhibition at Wembley in 1924 as displaying the "largest and smallest Fountain Pens in the World". It is no coincidence that this was the same exhibition that over one million visitors saw Queen Mary's Dolls' House on display for the first time.
