The Estate of Michael Illingworth
ART+OBJECT is pleased to announce a unique catalogue, one of the most significant artist estate collections ever offered to the New Zealand market. Michael Illingworth (1932 - 1988) holds a unique position within the canon of New Zealand art history. In the 1960s his jewel-like canvases depicting the ?Piss-Quick?, Tawera and Adam and Eve figures became almost overnight sensations, jousting with middle class mores and the media ? his 1965 nude figures even, famously, attracting the attention of the police. At the time Illingworth always seemed to be at the center of the debate in the development of a unique New Zealand sensibility in the visual arts. Like many of the 1960s generation his world view was cemented by time spent in London and he returned from that exploding art scene armed with a set of creative ideals that he developed for the balance of his career. The Michael Illingworth Estate Collection is brimming with canvases, works on paper and seldom seen sculptures from the late 1950s to the 1980s.
