Fine Art & Artifacts: Audubon, Pre-Columbian

The November 19, 2017 sale at Worth Auctions features a tantalizing range of fine art and artifacts originating from every continent and dating from antiquity to the twentieth century. Numerous antique natural history illustrations will be showcased, including large-format, hand-colored plates by Audubon and Gould as well as unique watercolor studies by lesser-known practitioners. Among these are many sought-after botanical and ornithological subjects as well as several compelling quadruped species including Australian marsupials and North American mammals. East Asian offerings will include Chinese ink stones, Japanese woodblock prints, Korean celadon ewers, Tibetan bronze miniatures, and Thai ceramic vessels. Other scarce and desirable artifacts in the sale are a Navajo memory cloth, a Bura bust, a pre-Columbian terracotta dog head jar, a large woven head mask from the Sepik River region of Papua New Guinea, and a hand-painted folk art wooden box from Norway. This auction will also include the second session of sculptures by the noted Abstract Expressionist Salvatore Grippi, whose work has graced the walls of the Whitney and the Smithsonian but is rarely brought to market. Worth Auctions is located at 2085 Dryden Road, Freeville, New York, just seven miles northeast of Cornell University, and all sales are simulcast to the global collecting community via Invaluable, LiveAuctioneers, and eBay Live.
