Our Summer 2018 sale covers a broad range of potting traditions and styles, with outstanding objects representing the East Coast from Massachusetts to Georgia, westward to Ohio and Illinois. Among the 450+ lots in this auction are a number of works considered "iconic" in American ceramics and folk art collecting circles. Many of these are entirely new discoveries, and others are works that have resurfaced after many years of enjoyment, or hiding in storage, in houses throughout the country. Highlights include: Lot 75, an Anna Pottery stoneware fair jug w/ profuse decoration. Lot 28, an important large-sized face jug, Edgefield, SC, circa 1845-65--one of the finest Edgefield face vessels ever to come to auction. Lot 1, an exceptional stoneware churn w/ cobalt lion decoration, Stamped "J. BURGER, JR. / ROCHESTER, N.Y.", c. 1885--among his finest works. Lots 29 and 30, monumental pieces by Lincoln County, NC master, Daniel Seagle. Lot 153, a historically-significant Civil War crock w/ eagle decoration, inscribed "WE ARE AFTER YOU", stamped "J.B. PFALTZGRAFF / YORK, PA." Lot 263, a stoneware spaniel doorstop, Greensboro, PA. Lot 265, a six-gallon jar inscribed "A. & W. B. / Greensboro, Pa / Oct. 9th 1863," by the Boughners. Lot 91, a Shenandoah Valley slip-decorated redware eagle vase by J. Eberly, Strasburg, VA, c. 1890. Lot 90, a Shenandoah Valley redware pitcher and bowl set, Strasburg, VA. Lot 23, a five-gallon stoneware starface churn stamped "T. HARRINGTON / LYONS", NY. Lot 11, a four-gallon double pheasant churn, stamped "J. & E. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT." Lot 10, an extremely rare "E. & L.P. NORTON / BENNINGTON, VT" stoneware potter's stamp. Lot 19, an elaborate stoneware deer churn stamped "FORT EDWARD POTTERY CO. / FT. EDWARD, N.Y." Lot 193, a presentation redware jar w/ incised bird decoration, dated July 3, 1835, by David Mandeville, Circleville, NY, 1835. Lot 112, a four-gallon angel crock stamped "W.A. MACQUOID & CO. ... NEW YORK."
