- 2 AM: Special Sale: Herman & Ruth Engel Collection, Los Angeles (#5400-5548)
Northern Prints from the 15th-16th Century
The collection has been built over many decades by Berlin born Herman Engel, who at age 100 passed away a few years ago in Los Angeles. Herman Engel focussed in his collecting efforts mainly on German and Dutch Renaissance Prints, among which the engravings and woodcuts by Albrecht Dürer form the core of the collection. But he was also interested in Dürer’s predecessors such as Martin Schongauer and Israhel van Meckenem as well as his contemporaries as Albrecht Altdorfer or Hans Baldung Grien. The so-called German Little Masters like Sebald and Barthel Beham and Heinrich Aldegrever, which are well represented in the collection, convey a beautiful insight into the life at that time.

The collection offered in this auction was acquired between 1950 and the 1970s. Important works were purchased by the collector in the famous Salmon-Schocken auction at Hauswedell in Hamburg. Highlights of the clearly subject-oriented collection include the high quality drawings and the group of bronze sculptures which are of an exceptional quality, indicating that they are early casts.
