Eclectic Selection of Prints, Art & More
A special New Year?s auction featuring many unusual items including numerous vintage hand-colored prints and several original works of art. Of special note is the American Impressionist miniature by Alexander ?Sandor? Vago. Other original works of art include an original full-size cartoon in pencil attributed to notable New Yorker Magazine cartoonist Mort Gerberg, an original painting by famed Greenwich Village artist Clara Tice, and a dry point by Linda Lloyd. A large copperplate engraving from the 1793 first edition of Icones Plantarum Rarorium and four Barraband hand-colored engravings of birds are some of the more intriguing items to be offered. Several first edition James De Kay prints from the 1840s are included, as are a number of Ebenezer Emmons first printing hand-colored lithographs from the 1849 Agriculture of New York. This auction includes a scarce item that seldom comes up for sale: an entire set of lovely Peckmore die proofs of scenes used as the basis for the 1934 U. S. National Parks postage stamp issue. Denton, Sowerby, Baxter, Curtis, MacClise and Buffon are just a few of the other artists whose work is represented in this special sale.
The sale includes desirable hand-colored lithographs plus very collectible chromolithographic prints. As an aid to discerning bidders, some brief notes on each of these processes should prove instructive. With lithography, the artist draws his own illustration directly on the lithographic stone. Prints are made from the drawing with no intermediary such as an engraver. Accurately reproduced and then colored by hand, the resulting illustrations give the impression of original watercolor paintings. Even today, with all of the excellent methods of color reproduction available, the beauty of these vintage hand-colored lithographs is rarely surpassed.
