Photographs from the George Raum Collection 2
This auction features a collection of 19th century original photographs from a second and third album collected and compiled by artist George Edward Raum (1846 - 1935) in the early 1880s and were the basis for his book "A Tour around the World" published in 1895. George E. Raum was not a photographer and purchased his photographs from the most prominent photographers during his world tour. He notes under the title of the book: 'Being a brief sketch of the most interesting sights seen in Europe, Africa, Asia, and America, while on a two years-ramble'. This group of 100 photographs encompasses Italy, France, Spain and Belgium. The photographs have been removed from the albums. George Raum was known as an Egyptologist, he painted and donated 'The Sphinx' to the Smithsonian American Art Museum in 1896. A reprint of his book is available from the British Library, Historical Print Editions. (Unfortunately, it is not illustrated).
