Dispersal of items from a Book Seller's private collection continues. The liquidation of a long-time book seller's private collection continues with a sale of scarce and lovely vintage prints, 75% of which have never been offered in any venue. An exciting and unusual group of items in this sale are the entire set of scarce first edition plates from Volume 1 of John and Thomas Doughty's Cabinet of Natural History and American Rural Sports, the first American color plate book to feature sports subjects. These are some of the finest examples of early American hand-colored lithography from a stone plate. Thomas Doughty, who created the images, was one of the founding fathers of the Hudson River School, the first native art movement in America. Published in 1830, the complete group of original 24 first edition hand-colored plates are rarely offered in a single venue. These are significant plates (several examples are included in the collection of the Library of Congress). Several scarce, original aquatints from Charles Hamilton Smith's Costumes of the Army of the British Empire, according to the last regulations? are also being offered here for the first time. These 1812 plates are ideal for the serious collector of militaria, or for those who want to grace their walls with quality examples of the aquatint process. A very special lot in this sale features two Ohio land grants with the bold signature of the fifth president of the United States, James Monroe. Mounted together and surrounded by a lovely wooden frame, this is the perfect item for lovers of Americana. Another group of very exotic items rarely seen at auction are five scarce art proofs depicting the Passions of the Horse by Henry Barnard Chalon. These 1827 large format images are dramatic and strikingly beautiful. Many more hand-colored engravings and lithographs, scarce chromolithographs and other items are being offered in this sale of documents that are both collectible and beautiful.
