Books, Maps, Photographs and Manuscripts

Lyon and Turnbullā€™s sale of Printed Books, Maps, Photographs and Manuscripts on 12th July comprises some 508 lots. These include a large quantity of books from the Restenneth Library, Forfar, Angus, the property of the Graham Hunter Foundation, which cover all aspects of Scottish history, culture and literature. Literary works include Burtonā€™s classic work, The Anatomy of Melancholy, 1660 (Ā£300-400), the National Edition of Charles Dickensā€™s Works (Ā£500-800), finely bound sets of Shakespeare, a first edition of Oscar Wildeā€™s The Importance of Being Earnest, 1899 (Ā£600-800) and a signed limited edition of Virginia Woolfā€™s Beau Brummel, 1930 (Ā£400-600). Historical works include a collection by Patrick Colquhoun who wrote extensively on the London police and poverty, Rossā€™s A Voyage of Discovery to Baffinā€™s Bay, 1819 (Ā£500-800) and The British Military Library, 1799-1801 with many fine plates (Ā£1000-1200). Sporting and Natural History books include a fine set of Donovanā€™s The Natural History of British Insects, 16 volumes in 8, 1794-1813 (Ā£1500-2000) and a rare angling work by Thomas Best, A Concise Treatise on the Art of Angling, 1787 (Ā£800-1200). A good collection of books on Ireland come from the library of the Earl of Clarendon, one of whose predecessors was Lord Lieutenant of Ireland. A rare work relating to Scotland is the Plan and Section of the planned Forth Railway Bridge, a large folio of plans, sections and contract drawings, belonging to the engineer Patrick Meik, 1882 (Ā£1000-2000). The map section has a fine coloured map by John Speed of The Kingdome of Scotland, c.1610 (300-500) and others by Timothy Pont, Willem and Jan Blaeu. Other highlights include a signed letter from Sir Winston Churchill (Ā£600-800), a letter from the ā€œacid bath murdererā€, John Haigh, relating to the dog of one his victims (Ā£250-350), an autograph letter by Robert Burns (Ā£300-400) and a letter superscribed by King James I and VI of Scotland (Ā£350-450). The Photography section includes a collection of portraits of Marlene Dietrich, Audrey Hepburn, Ingrid Bergman, Grace Kelly and others by Cecil Beaton and a whole series of photogravure portraits by James Craig Annan printed from the original calotype negatives of David Octavius Hill and Robert Adamson, as well as P.H. Emersonā€™s influential Idyls of the Norfolk Broads, 1888 (Ā£3000-5000). Scottish photographers are represented by William Crooke and Edward Reuben Yerbury, senior and junior.
