Auctions America - Hartung Collection - Fri

The Lee Roy Hartung Collection began when he moved to Glenview, Illinois in 1950 and began collecting license plates. In the salvage and general hauling business, Lee had access to many hidden treasures from the local area, often being paid in kind for hauling objects away. The key to what became the Lee Roy Hartung Collection was not just this drive to collect and preserve the history of the cars, motorcycles, bikes and all manner of collectibles; Lee?s penchant for organizing and arranging his treasures is obvious to anyone lucky enough to have seen his museum. Lee would spend hours creating displays for his collection, and although upon first glance the museum looked chaotic due to the sheer number of things on exhibit, closer inspection revealed a thoughtful, underlying order. Lee loved to share his museum with friends, car and motorcycle clubs and the occasional unexpected visitor. Sharing his knowledge about the items in the museum was a passion, but his first and foremost concern was preserving history. So many people have wondered in awe when on the Hartung grounds, "Why didn't he sell anything?" Lee could never bear to part with his things for fear that buyers just wanted to re-sell something for a profit. In Lee's view, he wasn?t so much the 'owner' of his treasures but rather their temporary 'caretaker'. Sadly, Lee passed away on May 18 earlier this year. His one-of-a-kind collection brought joy to many people. Almost everything he kept is in completely original, timewarp condition, resulting in a very rare opportunity for other passionate collectors. Auctions America is honored to present this interesting, remarkable and totally unique collection of an equally unique character, Lee Roy Hartung.
