From the private collection of a 78-year-old map dealer. This special event features several maps from the rare first printing of a sought-after American atlas, printed only for a couple of months in the beginning of 1860. Samuel Augustus Mitchell, Jr’s New General Atlas was his initial offering in the atlas business. He completely revised the size and look of his father’s previous atlas maps, but revised those maps just a couple of months after the first printing by moving the plate numbers within the frames of the maps to the outside, thus making them page numbers. These rare first printing maps are thus easy to identify, but very difficult to purchase, as they rarely come onto the market. Mitchell Jr’s 1863 New General Atlas, published during the height of the Civil War, also contributes several maps to this sale. A group of maps from the 1865 Johnson New Illustrated Family Atlas offer views into America during that terrible war period. The 1867 version of Johnson’s atlas is also well-represented. Maps from a scarce early edition of Rand, McNally’s Indexed Atlas of the World are included. This 1881 edition contains state maps that are generally the earliest available from a McNally atlas—all earlier editions are considered extremely rare. A group of topographical maps of Ohio from surveys taken around the turn of the 20 th century are present. Colton’s 1856 Atlas of the World, maps from Orlando Gray’s 1873 Atlas of the World, Matthew Carey’s 1816 General Atlas, Anthony Finley’s 1833 New General Atlas and many more map treasures will be found in this eclectic auction.
