The Marc Seidler Collection of New Guinea Art
Marc Seidler Collection of New Guinea Art.
Marc Seidler was born in British Palestine in 1938 to an Austrian family. At an early age he emigrated to Australia and worked in business and finance. Marc was always fascinated with the arts of New Guinea and Aboriginal Australia and began to collect in the 1970s. In the late 1970s he took the job of managing the Hotel on the Island of Daru, a small island off the coast of Papua New Guinea in the Northernmost Torres Straits. Here he became friends with famed field collector and crocodile hunter George Craig who was one of the first to collect art in the Papuan Gulf and the Fly River areas in the late 1950s. Craig had amassed an enormous collection, and his wife had a small shop next to the hotel. Marc soon decorated the hotel with the art and began to purchase many of Craigs private pieces from George Craig directly.
Seidler also travelled extensively in the highlands of New Guinea and to the Telefolmin region.
Over the years, he became close friends with legendary dealers such as Lynda Cunningham who would stay on Daru after her collecting trips for vacation (Marc and Lynda remained close friends until her death). Field collector Rudi Ceaser was also a regular guest. Marc passed away in 2020 in Australia.
