Howard Collection of Early Comic Art & Original Political Illustration comprises nearly 800 Circa WWI to WWII original newspaper editorial pen and ink drawing illustrations by over 500 listed illustrators to be offered over several months. Charles L. Howard, Esq. was a leading railroad industry figure between the Wars, serving as a chief officer for the Santa Fe Railroad and council to the American and Western Railway Assns. Much of this collection was exhibited at the Art Institute of Chicago in 1939 as well as elsewhere prior to 1945 and comes to auction from a descendent of the family.
The collection is encyclopedic in scope with extensive New York, Ohio, Illinois and California subjects. Just a sampling of artists include Thomas Nast, Charles Dana Gibson and Boardman Robinson while comic strips feature Tarzan, The Phantom, Henry, Betty Boop, Felix the Cat and HUNDREDS more, still being cataloged!
