Antique & Modern Jewellery
Each month, as this catalogue takes shape, we watch the humble, empty pages develop into rich canvasses painted with vibrancy and colour; full of quality gems, detailed craftsmanship and innovative design. Along the way certain items catch our eye; some for their lavishly bejewelled form,
others for the interesting stories that accompany them and still others simply because they take our fancy or make us smile, and sometimes that's enough.
As the sale date approaches we wonder if those who view the sale will enjoy such pieces as much as we enjoyed cataloguing them.
We've learnt to appreciate that, like great art, great jewellery splits opinion, and that the different, sometimes opposing points of view that emerge as we discuss and examine jewellery, keep what we do here fresh and exciting.
Our back cover lot, an early 20th century lady's platinum sapphire and diamond fob watch, is certainly something different (lot 617). Here we find function is overtaken by form, as what would be a humble nurse-style watch becomes a surprising and unique adornment, superbly executed and ideal for an enthusiast who likes to do things their own way.
