A Selection of Traditional & Contemporary African masks, sculptures and utilitarian objects from the African Continent gathered by Charles Blockson over decades for his personal collection. BIO: Charles L. Blockson (1933-2023)
The lure of Africa captured renowned historian, bibliophile, and writer, Charles L. Blockson’s interest during childhood. He learned of his Igbo (Nigerian) heritage as well as his ancestors' participation in the Underground Railroad through his own genealogical research. Blockson traveled extensively throughout the world as he researched, wrote, and collected African, African American, and Caribbean publications and materials. Over the years, Blockson accumulated a rich and extensive collection of African artifacts. Mr. Blockson co-founded the African American Museum in Philadelphia in 1976. In 1984, he founded the Charles L. Blockson Afro-American Collection and donated its more than 20,000 holdings, which he had amassed over the years, to Temple University. Charles Blockson was appointed by the United States Secretary of the Interior to chair the Underground Railroad Advisory Committee. He attended the ceremony on July 21, 1998, when President Bill Clinton signed the National Underground Railroad Network to Freedom Act. In 2007 the Penn State’s University Libraries acquired a selection of the Charles L.Blockson Collection of African-American and the African Diaspora, an important assemblage of some 10,000 volumes relating to the rich history. Charles L. Blockson was awarded the prestigious Philadelphia Award in 2016. In June of 2022 in Norristown, PA (his hometown), The Charles L. Blockson Exhibit debuted, showcasing his legacy and extensive body of work. In August 2023, the middle school that Charles Blockson attended in his youth (Stewart Jr. High School) was renamed Blockson Middle School in his memory.
