Prints and Multiples

Heralding the arrival of spring, the upcoming Prints and Multiples auction opens with David Hockney's glorious lithograph Sun, 1973, one of three prints offered from his ‘Weather' series. A remarkable ensemble of Pop Art includes the seminal series ‘11 Pop Artists' from 1965, featuring icons of printmaking such as Roy Lichtenstein's Reverie and Sweet Dreams, Baby!. Acquired from the Sonnabend Gallery in Paris in 1969, these prints were never framed and retain their brilliant original colour. The roll call of famous prints continues with the most sought-after version of Andy Warhol's Queen Elizabeth II, Royal Edition, 1985, in diamond-dust-sprinkled shades of pink, as well as his portraits of James Dean, 1985, and Mick Jagger, 1975. Keith Haring's Fertility, 1983, and Icon Suites, 1990, in rare complete sets, feature the artist's signature bold outlines and day-glow colour, embodying his radical message of hope and activism. Spanning the breadth of printmaking from Impressionism to Minimalism, the auction also includes important French prints of the fin-de-siecle, such as Henri de Toulouse-Lautrec's lithograph La Danse au Moulin Rouge, 1897, a tender depiction of a lesbian couple dancing in a music hall, and a rare etched self-portrait Edgar Degas, par lui-même, 1857, one of only three impressions signed by the young artist. Modern prints feature linocuts and etchings by Pablo Picasso, lithographs by Marc Chagall, and an extensive group of prints by Joan Miró, including the early surrealist etchings Série noire et rouge, 1938.
