Nye & Company
Nye & Company Auctioneers will host a three-day spring auction series in Bloomfield, NJ, from April 29 to May 1. The event begins April 29 with a single-owner sale featuring the collection of Mary Frances and John H. "Jack" Wood of Montclair, known for fine art, carpets, and Southwestern decorative arts. Highlights include a still life by Henri Manguin, plus works by Robert Emmett Owen, Paul Sawyier, Cullen Yates, and New Jersey artist Henry Gasser. Navajo rugs, ceramics, and woven baskets are also included.
The Chic and Antique Auction follows April 30 to May 1, offering American furniture, fine art, historical documents, and celebrity-owned items, including property from Meryl and William Russell. A key highlight is a group of 33 letters between Franklin D. Roosevelt and Herbert Pell (1918-1945), ending with a letter from Eleanor Roosevelt announcing FDR's death. A 19th-century Steinway piano owned by the Pell family is also featured.
The sale includes early American furniture (such as a circa 1770 Chippendale chest and Windsor chairs), items linked to figures like Andy Warhol, John F. Kennedy, Jacqueline Kennedy Onassis, and Vivien Leigh, and works previously owned by collectors including Brooke Astor and the Rockefeller family. Additional offerings include folk art portraits, silver, jewelry, and a bronze sculpture by Gaston Lachaise.
Public exhibitions run from April 20 through the sale dates at Nye & Company's gallery. Bidding is available online and by phone. Founded in 2003, Nye & Company is known for curated sales of fine art and historically significant works.
