Paintings of People - Art of Robert Slater
Whimsical, Unusual, and Erotic - The Art of Robert L. Slater! This auction contains 88 paintings (lots) that represent almost the artist's entire work. Robert L. Slater was born in 1919 in Queens, New York. He served as an infantryman in World War II, earning the Bronze Star and participating on D-Day in Normandy. Later he attended the Cooper Union School of Art in New York. He worked for many years in New York City as an illustrator before becoming a dealer in primitive antiques. He turned his artistic talents to oil on canvas, painting in the mid-1980's and eventually completed approximately ninety works prior to his death in Suffern, New York in 1995. Most of his paintings are initialed,or signed and/or dated. Robert Slater's paintings exhibit a provocative and imaginative nature. They celebrate the female form and explore the relationship between men and women in a whimsical and thought provoking fashion.
Many of these paintings are oil on canvas, but there are also paintings the artist did on the materials he had available including oil on board, particle board, Masonite, and even cardboard. They vary in condition and subject matter, with a variety of sizes and many are very large in size. The frames utilized are also what the artist had at hand including some antique or vintage frames, aluminum (previously used for screen windows), wood and other materials and some paintings are of mixed media. The subject matter is non-nude, nude and erotic. These paintings have been in storage for nearly twenty years and two of his paintings are known to the auction company to have been sold previously, both in private sale by the owner.
