Fine Chinese and Asian Works of Art

Almost 600 lots of Chinese and Asian art will be offered in our rooms on 27th and 28th May. For the Chinese art category lots, many will be of interest for the international and local collectors. Amongst the numerous jades, two splendid spinach green jade vases stand out. Dated to the Qianlong reign (1736-1795), they are finely carved with archaistic motifs. In the paintings section, 'Chicks' by Qi Baishi is a perfect example of the unique style of the artist: in its simplicity, the subject is characterised by a vibrant and expressive vitality. For the Buddhist religious art, two important gilt wood figures of Bodhisattvas standing on double lotus bases and a Buddha seated in a tiered pedestal in the fine cloisonné technique, is decorated with colourful enamels on a bright gilt ground? will be offered in this sale. A pair of porcelain vases, formerly in the collection of an aristocratic family, are decorated in famille rose on a celadon ground and are accompanied by two ormolu bronze bases. Amongst the art belonging to the period of the Republic of China, we are delighted to present two beautifully painted plaques featuring scholars in landscape scenes. The art of the Indian area is well represented by a splendid Gandhara sculpture of a Bodhisattva: dated to the fourth century, carved in grey schist, it combines serene and sumptuous styles. The Japanese art lots comprise an exquisite ivory okimono depicting a fruit vendor. Other categories of objects will be offered within this sale, comprising: Chinese and export style porcelains, paintings, bamboo brush pots, precious textiles, Tibetan thangka, corals, snuff bottles, many of which belonging to distinguished private collections.
