David Rago Fine Art Auction

On May 20, 2006 at 6 p.m. EST, the Rago Arts and Auction Center presents a fine art auction with over 200 works from traditional to contemporary, most fresh to the market.
The auction features the work of a number of Pennsylvania impressionists, including the winter scene in moonlight entitled "Jerico House," a framed, signed and dated oil on board by George Sotter, from a private New Jersey collection. Other important works by Pennsylvania artists include a paintings by Fern I. Coppedge; Mary Elizabeth Price; Harry Leith-Ross; Anthonio P. Martino; a bronze sculpture by Pennsylvania Ten artist Beatrice Fenton; four early paintings by Walter E. Baum; works by regional modernists Clarence H. Carter, Franz Josef Ponstingle, Lloyd Raymond Ney and George S. Greene. Several fine paintings from the early part of the twentieth century include "A Buddhist Priest, 1900," a signed oil on canvas by Lilla Cabot Perry from the estate of the artist; "Provincetown," by Adelaide Morris; "The Winter Pond, 1929," by Canadian landscape artist Alexander Young Jackson; a still life by Luigi Lucioni, c.1937; a signed oil by Louis Kronberg; and a large oil with hand-carved frame by Henry White Taylor, c. 1934. Also for sale are the turn-of-the-century works "La Salute: Dawn, " a framed etching on woven paper by James Abbot McNeill Whistler and a framed oil on board triptych entitled "Tall Trees of California," by Karl Schmidt.
The sale includes a number of works of marine art, notably a large, signed work by Samuel Finley Morse Badger from the collection of a Coast Guard family in New Jersey; and an untitled work by William De Leftwich Dodge. African-American artists are well represented with important drawings and prints, including a signed graphite and gouache on paper by Aaron Douglas never offered before and a signed work by Charles Sebree.

Also featured are desirable pen and ink works by Edward Hopper from a private collection, original prints by Oscar F. Bluemner; early works from the estate of Elaine De Kooning; many works by Max Kuehne; a signed oil on canvas by Doris Lee; a still life by Odon Marffy; social realist paintings; cityscapes of Manhattan, Philadelphia, and New Jersey; and illustration art.
