Against the Grain: Five Centuries of Drawings

This auction is devoted to the medium of drawing with a selection of works from over five centuries. Since the beginning of the history of culture, mankind has devoted itself to drawing. The earliest testimonies date back to around 20,000 BC. In the Middle Ages the medium was conducive particularly to the designs of paintings, sculptures and buildings. It was only in the early modern period that the drawing developed into an independent work of art. The development of the central perspective led to more realistic forms of representation, the climax of which coincided with the Italian Renaissance. The eighteenth century was marked by the usage of new artistic means such as crayons and pastels; at the same time, the portrait study became important for the representation of the bourgeois, until, eventually, the subjects and means of drawing became more and more unconventional starting from the end of the 19th century.
