Antique Oversized Oushak Rug

Lot 0511 Details

Description
The terracotta field with an all over design displaying stepped blue medallions linked by angular vines supported by hooked flower heads linked to serrated leaves, and vines linked to plants, within a broad pale blue border enclosing stylised tulips supported by angular vines issuing flower heads and leaves. The reverse knotting detail and style of design confirms this carpet to be of the origin as stated in the Guarantee line. Carpets classified under the attribution of Ushak are made in Ushak itself and in neighbouring town and village workshops. Their designs are highly distinctive, displaying formal floral patterns drawn in a geometric simplistic style with stylised or abstract motifs, often totemic in appearance. The colours are distinctive and fall into two distinctive types; those that display a range of colours as seen in this carpet, with shades of terracotta, supported by shades of blue, yellow, green and darker red outlining, and another type displaying darker shades of red, blue and bottle green. This carpet falls into the first category. The tones of these colours indicate that this carpet was made between 1910 and the mid 1920's. Their open unconventional yet distinctive designs were extremely popular in western markets in the early years of the 20th century, and experienced a revival in the late 20th century into present times due to shifts in popular decoration styles favouring more open design styles presented in popular contemporary colours. Even worn carpets of this type do command significant values in the market. Circa 1920. Wool pile on wool foundation. Certificate of appraisal available.
